West Ham United told to make Julen Lopetegui sack call after ‘disgrace’ v Chelsea
West Ham United were a “disgrace” against Chelsea, but Julen Lopetegui deserves time to turn things around, according to Jason Cundy.
The Irons’ miserable start to the Premier League campaign continued with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Enzo Maresca’s side on Saturday (21 September) increasing the pressure on Lopetegui from fans.
Although talkSPORT pundit Cundy was quick to slam the Hammers for their “unacceptable” performance, he doesn’t think that the time has come for another change in the dugout.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Saturday (21 September, 17:42) he said: “It’s five games and it’s absolutely right to make that point that it was five games.
“He needs time to implement exactly what he wants to do, but that first half performance, certainly the first half an hour, that’s unacceptable.
“I don’t care if a new manager has come in or not. That was unacceptable. They were a disgrace. I’m not saying they could go down, I’m saying at the moment things need to improve rapidly.”
Will West Ham sack Julen Lopetegui amid London Stadium exit speculation?
The Hammers’ decision to sack David Moyes has been questioned ever since it was announced, but it would be naive to assume that the solution to all the Irons’ problems would be to sack another manager.
Yes, the start to the season under Lopetegui has been nothing short of “unacceptable” as Cundy has suggested, but changing the head coach for the second time in five months isn’t going to change that.

However, something needs to shift sooner rather than later at the London Stadium as West Ham could well be dragged into the relegation fight at the bottom of the Premier League table if results don’t improve.
The bare minimum that fans will expect from their team is application and desire. That has been missing from the Hammers under the management of Lopetegui so far and while that remains the case, they will be slammed by supporters and pundits alike.
