West Ham United told to make Jarrod Bowen decision after Kurt Zouma exit update

West Ham United should build a statue of Jarrod Bowen if he is named the new captain at the London Stadium, according to Tom Rennie.

Reports suggest that the England international may be in contention to become the Irons’ new skipper [Roshane Thomas, 5 July] as Kurt Zouma closes in on a summer transfer to Shabab Al-Ahli [David Ornstein, 8 August].

While most Hammers fans already hold Bowen in high regard for his Europa Conference League winner in Prague, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie believes the attacker should be honoured immediately if he is given the armband.

Writing on X on Thursday (8 August) he said: “If Jarrod Bowen is announced as the new captain of West Ham United then we shouldn’t wait to build the statue.

“Now is the time.”

Will Jarrod Bowen exit West Ham United amid transfer rumours?

Bowen is certainly already a modern-day West Ham legend and most supporters would likely get behind the decision to hand him the armband and some sort of statue outside the London Stadium in the future.

It isn’t often in football that clubs sign players who just seem to understand what the team means to the supporters, but the England international is exactly that and he has been a part of some of the best moments in recent history.

If and when Zouma’s exit is confirmed, he feels like the perfect candidate to take over the reins in the changing room. The chance of captaincy will be just another marker of the shift this summer under Julen Lopetegui.

Hopefully, some clarity will emerge about West Ham’s leadership group in the coming days. With a new season only a matter of days away now, the former Real Madrid boss has to choose a new skipper sooner rather than later.

Fans may have to wait a little while longer to see a Bowen statue erected in East London however. Maybe another winner in a cup final would be enough for the former Hull City man to stake his claim.
