West Ham United told Konstantinos Mavropanos has ‘got to go’ after clash v Fulham
Tom Rennie has told West Ham United that Konstantinos Mavropanos has “got to go” after what he did in the clash with Fulham.
Julen Lopetegui’s side picked up a valuable point at Craven Cottage on Saturday (15 September) as Danny Ings found the net late on to cancel out Raul Jimenez’s first-half strike.
While Max Kilman was criticised for his role in Fulham’s opener, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie was quick to tear into Mavropanos, suggesting that the Greece international is “nowhere near Premier League quality”.
Writing on X on Saturday (14 September) he said: “Mavrapanos again. Too deep. Doesn’t run back at pace. Doesn’t block the cross.
“Sorry, but he’s got to go. Nowhere near Premier League quality.”
Konstantinos Mavropanos London Stadium exit mooted at West Ham
It has been a surprise to see Mavropanos feature so regularly under Lopetegui in the early stages of the season, particularly when the former Real Madrid boss was so keen to revamp the defence left by David Moyes.
Jean-Clair Todibo is yet to really get a sniff in the Premier League after his summer move from Nice, with the Greece international keeping him out of the starting XI week in and week out.
While it would be unfair to pin all the blame on him for Fulham’s opener on Saturday, he was slow to get back into position and failed to get anywhere near the cross that picked out Jimenez in the penalty area.
It isn’t the first time he has made this sort of mistake in a claret and blue shirt. For the most part, the 26-year-old has been fairly consistent at West Ham. But when he makes errors, they tend to be incredibly costly.
Suggesting that he deserves to be sold after the draw with Marco Silva’s side may well be a step too far, but it wouldn’t be a shock if Todibo replaced him in the starting XI against Chelsea next week.
