James Murray is a lifelong West Ham fan and a current season ticket holder in the Billy Bonds Stand. He’s seen some incredible talents – as well as several forgettable names – don the famous claret and blue shirt since his first game 25 years ago. He’s now putting his passion for West Ham into words with a regular fan view for West Ham Zone…
Tim Steidten must put the wheels in motion for West Ham to sign Leif Davis.
The Ipswich Town defender is believed to have been on the Hammers’ list of targets for some time as we look to bring in a new left-back.
talkSPORT reported on its website on 27 February that the Irons are joined in the race for the 24-year-old by Newcastle United after he’s registered 15 assists in the Championship for the Tractor Boys this season.
It added that Davis is being eyed as we look to replace Aaron Cresswell after he’s fallen down the pecking order at the London Stadium.
The 34-year-old has been an excellent servant to the club over the past decade, but it’s certainly time to move him on after his influence has dropped off dramatically.
The last fullback who joined us from Portman Road was actually Cresswell and Davis would be hoping to make as big of an impact in East London if he were to complete the move over the summer.
Leif Davis performances has caught attention of West Ham
He’s been in fine form this season for Ipswich, having registered nearly an assist a game in their bid for promotion.
While first-choice left-back Emerson could be hard to topple for a starting spot, there is no doubt that another option is needed after Ben Johnson has had to fill in at left-back at points during this campaign.
There are a number of reasons why the former Leeds United academy product could be the perfect man to come in and be the long-term successor to the position.
The fact he’s English means he would add to the Premier League’s homegrown quota, while he may be available for a reasonable fee if Ipswich don’t go up this season.

That is why Steidten must start putting the plans in place to secure a deal now.
There could be a huge difference in price depending on which division the Tractor Boys are playing in come August as they currently find themselves second in the Championship.
While they may not be interested in doing a deal, there is absolutely no harm in testing the waters in the hope of landing Davis once the transfer window opens back up in the summer.
