West Ham take a look at ‘very expensive’ Championship defender – Journalist

West Ham United are in the market for a central defender, although it is proving harder than one would think.

The Irons have already tried and failed to bring in Burnley enforcer James Tarkowski, with David Moyes set to look lower.

West Ham could be set to try and sign players from the Championship instead, with their budget not reaching the heights of others in the Premier League.

The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinburg has shared an update on their defensive transfer plans, with three players mentioned.

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers and Monaco’s Djibril Sidibe have both been labelled as unlikely, although one Championship player has caught the eye.

“On possible West Ham signings, have heard that Arsenal’s Calum Chambers on loan one option,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Have had a look at Swansea defender Joe Rodon but he’d be very expensive. Not sure Monaco right-back Djibril Sidibe good enough any more.”

Not much chance of that then…

West Ham are struggling to splash the cash in this window, so any player described as “very expensive” won’t be coming to the London Stadium.

The Irons co-owner David Sullivan has even unbelievably admitted that his side may not make any signings in this window, and that is undescribable.

He went on to admit that he has three bids in for players from European leagues, with English clubs not wanting to do business.

That would rule out a move for Rodon, who has recently broken into the Wales international squad and pushed Swansea towards the play-offs.

Time will tell, but it looks as though the Irons are targeting players in Europe’s top-five leagues and we must be prepared for disappointment.
