West Ham United star Aaron Cresswell agrees last-ditch new contract at London Stadium
Aaron Cresswell has agreed a new one-year contract extension with West Ham United in a last-ditch u-turn, according to Roshane Thomas.
Writing on his personal X account (21 May), The Athletic journalist reports that the experienced left-back will re-sign with the Hammers despite his limited game time this season.
Cresswell was expected to leave the club this summer when his deal expired, but he will now be tied down until 2025 and is set to compete with Emerson Palmieri for the left-back spot under Julen Lopetegui.
West Ham United get huge boost for summer window
The Hammers are expected to see big changes at the club this summer, with David Moyes leaving and being replaced by Lopetegui as well as several player exits anticipated.
There was a suggestion that six defenders could be on their way out, which would see the club tasked with finding replacements for them all while also wanting to strengthen the team in other areas.
However, by keeping Cresswell at the club for another 12 months it means the left-back position is well covered while he is also capable of playing as a wing-back or as a third centre-back in a back three.
That significantly reduces the work that needs to be done in the summer, and keeps an experienced professional with great quality at the club.
He will no doubt be a leader in the changing room too having been at the club for almost a decade, so this can only be seen as a positive move for the club.
In other West Ham news, one Hammers loanee could leave the club permanently this summer.
