West Ham United senior staff member departs today ahead of Julen Lopetegui appointment

West Ham United backroom staff member Rob Newman has left the club, according to Jacob Steinberg.

The Guardian journalist shared via his X account on Tuesday (21 May) that there is no place for Newman as part of incoming boss Julen Lopetegui’s appointment.

Newman was brought to London Stadium to head the recruitment programme under David Moyes, but Tim Steidten now signs off on deals.

West Ham going through period of change

There were plenty of rumours last summer, around the time of Steidten arriving, that Newman was surplus to requirements.

The departure of Moyes was always likely going to be the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, and so that has proved.

Steidten will stay and oversee transfer activity at London Stadium this summer, both incoming and outgoing, while Lopetegui will also likely have some say.

What will be interesting to see is whether the Spaniard is allowed to bring in any of his own men as part of the club’s behind-the-scenes staff.

The positive from this is that the Irons have been proactive in sorting things out behind the scenes while the 2023-24 campaign is technically still ongoing.

That is hopefully a positive sign of what is to come over the summer, with at least a few more players arriving before the next season begins.

It could be an exciting period ahead of the club, one in which Newman will play no part in after this decision.

In other West Ham news, the wife of a Hammers player has potentially stirred up a controversy with her recent comments on social media accusing the club of bias.
