West Ham United signing Jakub Kiwior will surely mean the end for Angelo Ogbonna

West Ham eyeing a move for Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior should mean Angelo Ogbonna’s time at the London Stadium is coming to a close.

Ogbonna has been at the London Stadium since 2015 and has gone on to make 208 appearances for the Irons over seven years. The 34-year-old’s contract is up in the summer and although he has hinted at potentially wanting to enter negotiations over a new deal, it’s unlikely that he will be offered fresh terms.

The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano revealed (Here We Go Podcast, 15:24 28 September) West Ham do remain interested in Kiwior despite failing to get a summer deal over the line.

West Ham targeting another central defender is a big indication of where Ogbonna’s future lies. At the moment the Italian has four players ahead of him.

Bringing in a player such as Kiwior would be good long-term planning from David Moyes and a significant changing of the guard defensively for the Hammers. Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer and along with Kurt Zouma provide new and improved options for the West Ham boss to choose from.

Craig Dawson is another player whose future has come under scrutiny of late, and the Hammers’ continued interest in Kiwior could also cast doubts over his future at the London Stadium.

It’s refreshing to see the club continually linked with players even when the transfer window is currently shut. Although this summer was hectic for the Irons, it feels as if it is only the start of a gradual overhaul of players at the London Stadium.
