West Ham United: Robbie Fowler names what could have cost David Moyes in new sack verdict
West Ham manager David Moyes has become a “victim of his own success” since lifting the Europa Conference League, according to Robbie Fowler.
Moyes is under increasing pressure at the London Stadium after a poor run of results in recent weeks, which includes a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal in East London (11 February).
Although he has been offered a new contract, the pressure is still very much on, and ex-Liverpool and England striker Fowler has detailed one factor that may have increased the pressure on the 60-year-old.
Writing in the Sunday Mirror (25 February, page 69), Fowler said, “David Moyes has become a victim of his own success at West Ham United.
“It was clear to see what winning the Europa Conference League last season meant to Moyes, and to Hammers fans so unaccustomed to silverware.
“But success brings greater demands. Hammers fans want more now – and are right to expect it.”
West Ham fans must be careful what they wish for
Fowler is spot on, West Ham fans will have higher expectations having lifted the Conference League last June and they are right to call for the club to kick on from that success.
However, they must not forget that it was Moyes who allowed them to taste that success.
The Scot has worked wonders across his two spells at the London Stadium. During his first stint as West Ham boss, he saved the club from relegation and yet they still decided not to renew his contract and opted to appoint Manuel Pellegrini to push on.
Despite a lot of money spent, Pellegrini’s time at the Irons was far from successful and it was Moyes who the club turned to once again.
Since that point, the former Everton boss has led the club to European glory and consistent top-half finishes in the Premier League.

As a result, the board could perhaps be nervous to once again make a managerial change, and supporters should appreciate that those particular changes don’t always lead to long-term success.
In other West Ham news, one pundit has predicted the result of the clash between the Hammers and Brentford on Monday night (26 February).
