West Ham United remain focused on midfield despite Flynn Downes deal

West Ham United could go back into the transfer market to sign another midfielder this summer, according to the Evening Standard.

The Irons are closing in on signing Swansea City ace Flynn Downes for a reported £9million which could rise to £12million if add-ons are included in the deal.

The Englishman is undergoing his medical at Rush Green ahead of his proposed move after West Ham managed to beat Crystal Palace to the 23-year-old’s signature.

His announcement as a Hammers player should come this week but despite adding more strength in depth to the midfield, David Moyes may look to sign another body to bolster the engine room.

Mark Noble’s retirement and Alex Kral ending his loan spell leaves the club worryingly short in central midfield with Conor Coventry the only academy youngster to be in contention for a first-team promotion.

Trust the youth

At West Ham United, we have one of the best youth setups in the entire Premier League but Moyes has shown a real reluctance to give any of them a good chance to shine.

Ben Johnson is the only exception to that fact having established himself as a solid squad player but he is not the only talented young player we have on our books.

Coventry has just been one of Milton Keynes Dons’ standout performers as they reached the League One playoffs last season and that should be the sign to Moyes that he is ready to be a squad player at the London Stadium.

He isn’t the only one either with Aji Alese and Armstrong Okoflex, in particular, shining for the Under-23 side and knocking on the first team door louder than ever before.

We don’t need to go out and spend even more money on a central midfielder right now because we have the quality within the club already to fill out places in the squad and meet the homegrown quota for Europe at the same time.
