West Ham United ‘relegation’ joke shared after Jean-Clair Todibo transfer update

Tom Rennie has joked that he “can’t wait to see how” West Ham United end up in the bottom three after an update emerged around Jean-Clair Todibo.

Reports have suggested that the Hammers have managed to hijack Juventus’ deal for the Nice defender and he is now set to complete an initial loan move to the London Stadium this summer [Fabrizio Romano, 8 August].

Todibo joins the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and Max Kilman in making the move to East London but talkSPORT broadcaster is still expecting the Irons to end up in the relegation zone.

Writing on X on Friday (9 August) he said: “Oh damn. Can’t wait to see how we end up in the relegation zone with this team.”

Will Jean-Clair Todibo exit Nice amid West Ham United transfer rumours?

It is clear that Rennie’s comments are completely tongue-in-cheek, but Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten’s business this summer does mean that the Irons will be held to a higher standard throughout the season.

The team that West Ham have assembled since David Moyes’ departure cannot be languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League.

They simply have to be competing for the European places and potentially a cup competition.

Todibo is an upgrade on Kurt Zouma, Summerville should be an upgrade on Said Benrahama, Fullkrug is an improvement on Michail Antonio and Rodriguez will provide some much-needed depth in the middle of the park.

Everything is in place for Lopetegui to hit the ground running. Now it is down to him to get this team playing some good, attacking football.

If he doesn’t, the pressure from pundits and fans is going to mount on him quickly and the Hammers fanbase can be hard to get back onside once they begin to turn.
