West Ham United ready Julen Lopetegui succession plan ahead of ‘huge’ Everton clash

Julen Lopetegui is on the edge of the sack at West Ham with the club ready to make a change after facing Everton, according to Give Me Sport.

It was reported on 3 November that while the Hammers hierarchy aren’t planning to sack the Spaniard after their 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, the clash with Everton on 9 November is “huge” for his future.

Lopetegui’s side host Everton before the final two-week international break of 2024, and with concerns over both their results and in-game performances, the London Stadium board are ready to pull the plug.

Senior figures at the club are already succession planning in the event that Lopetegui is sacked, with Edin Terzic being “considered” for a return to East London.

Julen Lopetegui on the brink after woeful West Ham start

If Lopetegui does become the second Premier League manager to lose his job this season – after helping condemn Erik ten Hag to the sack at Manchester United recently – few Irons fans will be surprised.

Even fewer supporters will be complaining if Lopetegui is given the boot, given his start to life in East London has delivered little other than dismal football and a series of heavy defeats already.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and now Nottingham Forest have all dispatched the Irons by at least two goals so far this season, with two of those losses coming at home.

Fans and pundits alike can see very little difference from the final weeks of David Moyes’ tenure – marked by leaky defence and sluggish attack – making the change of direction a welcome proposition.

Terzic – fresh off taking Dortmund to a Champions League final – would certainly provide that if he were to take the reins, and he would likely be a popular appointment at the London Stadium.
