West Ham United reach agreement with Formose Mendy’s camp, Southampton join race

Senegal right-back Formose Mendy prefers to join West Ham in the January window, but Southampton have joined the race, as reported by Wiwsport.

WiwSport is a popular digital platform in Senegal, mainly focussing on Senegalese players across various sporting events. The news portal has got a strong social media presence – they have over 84k followers on Twitter and 270k followers on Instagram.

The Atheltic reported on 11 January that the Hammers were closely monitoring the situation of the Amiens defender who was part of the squad for the World Cup in Qatar but he didn’t get to play a game.

It appears that the Saints have joined the race and the player’s situation has changed in recent hours. West Ham have reached an “agreement” with the player’s entourage, while the 22-year-old himself prefers a move to the London stadium.

Get it done

West Ham may look to sign a new defender in the January window following the departure of Craig Dawson.

The 32-year-old defender, who was an integral part of the Hammers squad under David Moyes, left the club to join Wolves in January.

He wanted to stay close to his family, and the Hammers agreed to the decision. Moyes ideally would have wanted to keep him, but he will now have to look for options elsewhere.

At the same time, the club should look for long-term replacements for Angelo Ogbonna who has a contract at the club until the end of the season.

The defender is seen as a key player in Amien’s bid to win promotion back to Ligue 1. The Hammers previously held exploratory conversations to sign the defender, and they need to move quickly with Southampton joining the race.

The Hammers have already signed Danny Ings from Aston Villa, and they could look to add more new faces this month.
