West Ham United: Phil McNulty rages at Kalvin Phillips ‘nightmare’ as England prediction made

West Ham loanee Kalvin Phillips being selected in the upcoming England squad would be a “mistake” by Gareth Southgate.

That is according to BBC Sport journalist Phil McNulty, who believes the midfielder has had a “nightmare” at the London Stadium.

Phillips joined the Hammers on loan from Manchester City in the January transfer window, and has made seven appearances in claret and blue so far.

“Jordan Henderson is at least back playing for Ajax but I honestly cannot give you one single good reason why Phillips should be in the next England squad,” McNulty said in a BBC Sport Q&A.

“He has either a) hardly played or b) had a nightmare at West Ham United when he has played. I think he may still pick Henderson, which I am not convinced about, but think it would be a mistake to pick Phillips.”

Will West Ham man Kalvin Phillips make the England squad?

Phillips has had a very difficult time of it lately, with the midfielder moving to the London Stadium from the Etihad in a bid to reignite his career, having been largely overlooked by Pep Guardiola.

But things certainly haven’t gone to plan for the 28-year-old in East London, with the midfielder failing to impress thus far.

Interestingly, however, England manager Southgate has constantly selected the former Leeds United ace in recent times.

That means regardless of his displays in claret and blue, the Hammers loanee may still make the cut for the next squad.

The Three Lions will take on Brazil and Belgium in international friendlies later this month as they prepare for Euro 2024 in the summer.

West Ham
Kalvin Phillips has struggled since joining West Ham United on loan from Manchester City.

Southgate was in attendance as West Ham drew 2-2 with Burnley at the London Stadium on Sunday (10 March), but Phillips didn’t get much of a chance to impress as he was hooked by David Moyes at half time after a poor 45 minutes.
