West Ham open talks over Napoli defender – Fabrizio Romano

West Ham United are stepping up their defender search with less than one week remaining in the transfer window.

David Moyes may be in isolation after his positive COVID-19 test, but he’s still working hard to try and secure his targets.

The Irons only have Fabian Balbuena and Angelo Ogbonna at this moment, with Issa Diop also in isolation after a positive test.

Fabrizio Romano has reported on Monday that the Hammers have opened talks with Napoli over defender Nikola Maksimovic.

The Sky Sports journalist shared the news on his personal Twitter account, claiming that no agreement has been reached as of yet.

“West Ham have opened talks with Napoli for Nikola Maksimovic as centre back,” he wrote.

“No agreement yet – negotiations on.”

So many potential signings have come and gone, with the Irons missing out on a number of options at the London Stadium.

Daniele Rugani, James Tarkowski, Wesley Fofana and Joe Rodon have all been mentioned in recent weeks, but moves have seemingly failed to materialise.

West Ham appeared to change tactic recently though, exploring loan options including Southampton’s Janik Vestergaard.

That move has also failed for the Dane, and now it appears as though they will try and secure Maksimovic – an established Serbian defender.
