West Ham United one of six accredited clubs by Living Wage Foundation

West ham United are one of only six Premier League clubs to be accredited by the Living Wage Foundation, according to BBC Sport.

The UK’s cost of living crisis has brought the payment of staff by Premier League clubs into the limelight and the Irons are among the few who do pay all of their staff, including sub-contractors, the minimum living wage.

As well as the Hammers, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Brighton and Crystal Palace are all accredited by the Living Wage Foundation with Newcastle United hoping to join them soon.

“It’s great clubs are paying the real living wage but we would love to see more and it would be great to see more clubs accredited because that is a signal of long-term commitment,” Living Wage Foundation director Katherine Chapman said.

“We all know that the success of matches and the success of the Premier League depends on staff like cleaners, security guards and caterers. So it’s really important that they’re part of that reward package.”

Keep it up

Considering some of the eye-watering transfer fees and wages that are being paid by not only West Ham but the rest of the Premier League, giving the hard-working staff their slice of the pie shouldn’t be a problem.

The FA should really make it mandatory for top-flight clubs to pay everybody a minimum of the living wage for the hours that they work at the ground or training facilities, even in corporate and marketing environments.

There are thousands of people who make every football club tick from day to day and even though they shouldn’t be paid the millions that the players and managers get each year, they do deserve to be recognised.

West Ham are doing tremendously in doing that so far as are the other five accredited clubs but more need to follow Newcastle in trying to join the collective.

Plenty have claimed that they are paying everybody as they should but until they get recognised by the Living Wage Foundation, no one can be certain it is the truth.
