West Ham United on brink of signing Flynn Downes after medical completed

West Ham are about to sign Swansea midfielder Flynn Downes as he has completed the medical ahead of his move, Dharmesh Sheth reports.

The Hammers burst into the running for the 23-year-old late in proceedings but are on the brink of confirming that the race has been won.

A price of around £12million is expected to what it takes to land the Englishman who was also being chased by Crystal Palace, with the final paperwork now being sorted.

Sky Sports reporter Sheth wrote on his Twitter account on Thursday afternoon (7 July): “Medical completed… paperwork being finalised… formal announcement expected soon”.

The signing will fill an area of need at the London Stadium as David Moyes was left with just star man Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek at the position, with the latter’s future at the club uncertain.

In stark contrast to most of the other transfer business during the summer window this move has started and almost finished in double quick time.

While other chases for known Irons targets have often resulted in competitors moving ahead, such as with Hull man Keane Lewis-Potter, the Irons have knocked Palace out of the running here.

At his age and price there is every chance that he could be a long-term fixture at the club, as he looks ready for Premier League football after 37 appearances in the second tier during 2021/22.

West Ham

The proceedings in the Downes transfer have to be very encouraging for the fanbase as it has shown a speed and purpose that has yet to be seen to such an extent this year.

In what will no doubt be a key position in the coming season there is set to be a different look to the squad, with long-time West Ham skipper Mark Noble now retired and Czech starter Soucek apparently on the way out.

Adding the up-and-coming Downes to the mix looks to be a strong move, although there will surely need to be further activity before the season starts.
