West Ham United offered chance to sign Harry Maguire as Manchester United departure on cards

West Ham United and Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire this summer, according to ESPN sources.

The Hammers are keen to significantly bolster their defensive options this summer and made an enquiry about signing the England international back in the January window which was rejected as Ten Hag wanted to keep him.

With Maguire set to become one of the big-name transfer sagas of the summer, it is believed that Manchester United may now be open to Maguire’s sale due to his lack of minutes and the need to recoup funds for an Old Trafford rebuild.

ESPN reveals [7 June]: “Maguire’s wage is a potential stumbling block for the north London club. Sources have told ESPN he earns in the region of £200,000-a-week but that figure is set to rise after United qualified for next season’s Champions League.

“Harry Kane is Tottenham’s top earner on the same amount and Maguire would likely have to take a pay cut to join Spurs, as would be the case with West Ham, who enquired about the England international in January.

“If David Moyes stays on, the club are likely to pursue a deal for Maguire.”

Statement addition

West Ham have had a lot of issues in defence this season whether it be with injuries, poor form or a mixture of both.

Nayef Aguerd has proven an astute signing but has suffered from a number of injuries, while fan-fave Kurt Zouma has continued to struggle with his own injury problems despite his excellent performances.

Also, Ogbonna is facing an uncertain future at the London Stadium, while there are doubts about whether Thilo Kehrer can become an established centre-back in East London.

It is evidently clear that West Ham United need an established name at the back, a player who is very durable, reliable and capable of becoming a key figure, and there may be no better candidate than Maguire even despite the criticism he’s faced of late.

The 30-year-old defender is an established Premier League defender, blessed with bags of experience and offers a quality that West Ham United severely lack in possession, something they could well do with next season.

With a potential windfall set to emerge at the London Stadium, with Declan Rice sealing a big-money move away this summer, it won’t be a surprise to see the Hammers spend big on Maguire’s services. He’ll certainly be a marquee and statement addition.
