West Ham United not looking at signing defender John Egan

West Ham United are not interested in signing Sheffield United defender John Egan despite contrary reports, according to Claret and Hugh.

The Sun reported on 10 September that the Irons would launch a January transfer bid of roughly £12million for the Republic of Ireland international who has stayed with the Blades after their relegation from the Premier League.

But according to what sources have told Claret and Hugh, there is no interest from Rush Green in signing the 29-year-old with the source saying: “We have seen all the stories. They are simply untrue.”

West Ham

David Moyes has already brought in two new central defenders over the summer but he was close to losing one with Craig Dawson yearning for a move back North to be closer to his family.

If the 32-year-old does leave, West Ham will once again find themselves short at the back with injuries continuously causing problems at the London Stadium.

Waste of money

£12million can buy you a lot more than you’d think in the transfer market and it would be totally wasted on a 29-year-old who is already past his best and hardly lighting up the Championship at Bramall Lane.

The Irons could invest in a very young defender who has a potentially sky-high ceiling while the likes of Thilo Kehrer, Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma take care of the here and now.

West Ham

Egan does not get into the West Ham side ahead of any of those when fit and there is still the vast experience of Angelo Ogbonna if the you know what hits the proverbial fan.

Having spent the best part of £170million over the summer, the Hammers are not in a position to be able to splash all kinds of cash here there and everywhere.

They have to be smart in January and again next summer to ensure that they don’t find themselves on a slippery slope to mid-table obscurity after working so hard to become top-half regulars.
