Millwall fan reaction emerges to West Ham United loanee Flynn Downes

Flynn Downes “got away with” being a West Ham player while playing at Millwall with loan club Southampton, according to journalist Alfie House.

The 24-year-old started his 10th Championship game for the Saints since joining on a season’s loan from West Ham in the summer, picking up a 1-0 win.

Downes played the full 90 minutes at The Den, but opposition supporters did not seem bothered about his Hammers links.

In a players rating article for the Southern Daily Echo, House said: “Got away with being a West Ham player at Millwall – nobody seemed to notice.”

Under the radar

Millwall fans are never usually slow in letting West Ham players – whether former or technically still current – know their feelings.

But Downes was able to go under the radar to help Southampton to a late 1-0 win, which would no doubt have been doubly sweet for him.

While he played a full part in the victory, though, the midfielder scored the lowest rating of any Southampton player on WhoScored with 6.7/10.

Downes committed three fouls, which was the joint-most of any player on the field at The Den.

The former England Under-20 international is a regular under Russell Martin, so he is clearly performing well on loan at St Mary’s.

With James Ward-Prowse heading the opposite way earlier in the summer, Downes has one mighty void to fill.

It remains to be seen whether he will return to West Ham at the end of the season, but hopefully, this loan move will help him revive his career.
