David Moyes hailed for ‘all-time great’ achievement with West Ham United
David Moyes holds claim to “an all-time great stat” after going 17 games unbeaten in Europe with West Ham, according to Sky Sports pundit Dougie Critchley.
West Ham extended their run without defeat in continental competitions with a 2-1 win at Bundesliga side Freiburg in Thursday’s (5 October) Europa League tie.
The Hammers overtook Bill Nicholson’s 1970s Tottenham, Don Revie’s Leeds United side from the 1960s and Pep Guardiola’s current Manchester City side, with the Citizens’ run still ongoing.
Taking to Twitter on Friday (6 October), Critchley said: “David Moyes’ West Ham breaking the record set by Pep Guardiola’s Man City, Bill Nicholson’s Spurs and Don Revie’s Leeds to set a new benchmark of 17 games unbeaten in Europe is an all-time great stat. Superb trivia.”
Keep it going
Moyes was unaware of this record West Ham were on the verge of when speaking ahead of the trip to Germany, but he admitted it was nice to be in the same company as those aforementioned legendary coaching figures.
The vast majority of those unbeaten matches – 15, to be precise – came in the Europa Conference League last season, a competition that the Irons of course went on to win.
Some will use that to play down this achievement, what with it being UEFA’s tertiary competition, but the Hammers have quite simply been ruthless in Europe over the past few seasons now.

With six points from six, West Ham are sitting top of Group A and can as good as wrap up a place in the knockout rounds with victory over Olympiacos later this month.
Even if that is the case, though, there is no sign of the Hammers dropping off as they look to prolong this impressive run and keep Man City at bay.
In other West Ham news, a Hammers player has emerged as a possible January target for Arsenal.
