West Ham United: Danny Murphy shares David Moyes sack verdict live on Match of the Day
Danny Murphy summed up the thoughts of the majority of West Ham supporters with his comments regarding David Moyes on Match of the Day.
The Irons fell to a 2-0 loss at Nottingham Forest on Saturday (17 February) to see their winless start to 2024 stretch to an eighth match.
Moyes’ future at London Stadium remains a hot topic of debate, with the Scotsman due to see his current contract expire in the summer.
Match of the Day pundit comments on David Moyes situation
Discussing Moyes’ future live on BBC One [18 February, 1hr, 2m, 25s], Murphy said: “I understand both sides of the debate.
“The criticism from supporters who pay a lot of money, 60,000 fans each week, they want to see their team playing more on the front foot.
“They want more energy – I understand that. Moyes also makes fair points in that his style has given West Ham a trophy and stabilised them.
“I think we’re getting to the stage in football where supporters want to be entertained. Look at Tottenham with Antonio Conte.
“They reached fourth and fifth in the Premier League, but they’re now enjoying their team play again. West Ham fans have lost that enjoyment.”
Not that West Ham fans will enjoy the comparisons with the situation at Tottenham, but what Murphy says is true – or at least in the view of many.
West Ham fans still split on David Moyes
It is worth noting that different Hammers fans have different views. Some are adamant that Moyes is deserving of a new contract at the club.
For others, though, positive results helped cover some disappointing displays up until the end of December, but things have since gone south.
A bland playing style can almost be accepted if wins are being racked up and trophies won, but less so if results turn in the manner they have.
Given the squad West Ham have assembled – and Moyes himself deserves credit for that – it is not unreasonable to ask for better football.

Unfortunately, Moyes does not look like he is able to change his ways and it is hard to see how results turn around from here.
Sacking Moyes would be harsh, even if some would like that, but going our mutual ways in the summer surely now makes the most sense.
You should always be careful what you wish for, but Tottenham have certainly not regretted making a big call in sacking Conte a year ago.
