West Ham United: talkSPORT host makes Alphonse Areola claim after what happened v Burnley

Andy Goldstein says Alphonse Areola had “no chance” of saving David Fofana’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Burnley and insists West Ham fans should be happy with their position in the Premier League.

The Irons’ inconsistent run continued as they were held by a team that entered Sunday’s (10 March) game sitting bottom of the division.

Fofana gave Burnley the lead with a superb long-range driver, before Konstantinos Mavropanos put the ball into his own net.

West Ham recovered through goals from Lucas Paqueta and Danny Ings in the second half, but they could not find a winning goal.

Discussing the scoreline on talkSPORT Drive [11 March, 4:40pm], Goldstein said: “You’ve got no chance of stopping that first goal.

“That’s the thing with the goals: the first one you can’t do anything about it, and the second one is an own goal.”

When co-host Darren Bent predicted a top-eight finish for West Ham this season, Goldstein replied: “That’d still be amazing”

West Ham turn focus to huge Freiburg tie

Areola was superb in the win over Everton, but there was little he could do to keep out the piledriver from Fofana.

The less said about the second goal, though, the better. Mavropanos could not adjust his feet properly and he was left red-faced.

United showed much better spirit in the second half and were good value for the point, but the shame is that two points were dropped.

West Ham

After appearing to turn a corner with wins over Brentford and Everton, the Burnley draw was a step backwards.

Sitting seventh in the Premier League with 10 games to go is not the worst place to be, but there is a frustration that things could have been better.

For now, all focus turns back to the Europa League and a huge last-16 second leg with Freiburg in midweek. Win that, and all of a sudden the campaign will have a much more positive slant once again.
