West Ham United: New injury timeline shared as Kalvin Phillips absent v Bayer Leverkusen
West Ham will be without midfielder Kalvin Phillips for around two weeks, having sustained a hamstring injury ahead of the Europa League clash v Bayern Leverkusen on Thursday (11 April).
That is according to Jack Rosser, who revealed that the on-loan Manchester City man suffered an injury during training on Tuesday 9 April, and will be out for a fortnight.
The Hammers are already without Jarrod Bowen due to injury, while Edson Alvarez is also unavailable for the European match through suspension.
Taking to X on Thursday (11 April), Rosser wrote: “Phillips expected to be out for around a fortnight. Picked up his hamstring injury in training on Tuesday.”
Kalvin Phillips handed further blow at West Ham United
The 28-year-old has experienced a very disappointing loan spell at the London Stadium, having joined from the current Premier League champions during the January transfer window.
The match against Leverkusen in the Europa League could have offered Phillips the perfect opportunity to earn some respect back from Hammers fans, with Alvarez unavailable for the clash.
Facing a tough introduction to life in London, making two key mistakes in the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth and 3-0 loss to Manchester United in February, Phillips has only continued to struggle.
The former Leeds United star is, undoubtedly, a talented midfielder but his confidence is currently at rock bottom. Moving to West Ham was supposed to help that, but it has thus far only made it worse.
Fans have become frustrated with Phillips, despite him trying his absolute best to regain match sharpness and confidence, but the mistakes have only compounded the pressure he felt at Man City.
West Ham are likely to play very defensively against the Bundesliga side on Thursday night, which would have suited Phillips’ no-nonsense style of play. Unluckily, he has suffered an injury just at the wrong time.
