West Ham United midfielder Flynn Downes still misses Swansea City

West Ham United spent £12million of their summer transfer budget on Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes to strengthen the engine room.

The boyhood Irons supporter was delighted to arrive at Rush Green and that wasn’t the end of the dealings between the two clubs either as Armstrong Okoflex headed for Wales late in the window on loan.

The Irish striker has been exceptional for the Hammers’ youth sides and now has earned his chance in senior football at the Swansea.com Stadium.

But he has revealed to the Swans’ official club website that Downes, who is yet to start for West Ham in the Premier League, still misses his former club.

I spoke to Flynn and he misses it here,” said Oko-Flex. “He is a top guy and a top player. He spoke about his time here and said how much he enjoyed it.

“He spoke really highly of the gaffer, and just hearing it from him and knowing the way Swansea play made my mind up.”

Natural

Considering he is yet to break into the Irons side since his summer move, you can hardly blame Downes for missing what had become his home in South Wales where he was the main man for Swansea.

The simple fact of the matter is that unless there is an injury to Declan Rice or Tomas Soucek, he is not going to suddenly become a starter over either of them.

They are both far too settled in the middle for David Moyes to risk dropping one of them, despite the poor start to the season, just to get a new signing a game or two here and there.

You have to assume that Downes knew he would be a backup at the London Stadium at first and potentially for a couple of years if the England international is not sold for nine figures or more next summer.

He’s just going to have to suck it up and get on with it if he wants his West Ham career to work out.
