West Ham United medics speak out on Niclas Fullkrug injury, alternative remedies sought

West Ham United are unsure when Niclas Fullkrug will return to action as concerns over his Achilles tendon injury grow, according to The Standard.

The newspaper reported via their website on Wednesday [13 November] that Irons medics are “reluctant” to put a timeframe on the striker’s return after initially deeming his injury “minimal” in September.

Fullkrug’s prolonged absence has made the medical staff realise that his injury was not healing on its own, leading them to seek “alternative remedies”.

The Germany international has not trained with Julen Lopetegui’s team since early October, but is working on a separate training programme.

The Hammers forked out 27million to sign Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund in the summer and his absence has been a cause of frustration for Lopetegui.

Michail Antonio and Danny Ings have scored only two goals between them across all competitions and one can only wonder if things would have been better for West Ham if Fullkrug was available.

The 31-year-old notched 16 goals and 10 assists from 46 games for Dortmund last season and also netted twice for Germany at the Euros in the summer.

There is no doubt that the striker is eager to get back on the pitch for the Irons, with The Standard reporting that he has been “knocked” by his lack of involvement.

Fullkrug has been seeking ways to keep his spirits high as he continues to work towards full fitness, but the frustration over his absence has led to talk over a January exit.

However, the East London outfit have no plans to sell him in the winter, contrary to reports [Suddeutsche Zeitung].

In other West Ham news, things could get worse for Lopetegui in attack, with this player possibly forcing his way out.
