West Ham United make offer for Swansea midfielder Flynn Downes

West Ham have made an offer for Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes to rival Crystal Palace for the 23-year-old according to The Athletic.

It has been suggested by The Athletic on Wednesday 6 July that David Moyes is prepared to match Palace’s £9million plus add-ons offer.

Russell Martin’s side are looking for £12million for the 23-year-old who is a West Ham fan.

Downes made 37 Championship appearances in the 2021/22 season and has previously been at Ipswich Town and Luton.

Championship success

The Hammers have had plenty of success when it comes to recruiting from the Championship and they shouldn’t be deterred on this occasion.

Downes is 23 and could well develop during his time at the Hammers should he make the move to the London Stadium.

Furthermore, the versatile midfielder would provide Moyes with an option that he currently doesn’t have at the London Stadium.

In Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice, Moyes has two combative midfielders whose roles are predominantly defensive.

Downes would be able to play in a defensive role as well operating further forward for the Hammers.

The fact the Swansea man is a West Ham fan could well give the Hammers an edge in their pursuit of him as well as European football being on offer at the London Stadium.

This would be an exciting addition at the London Stadium that would also be a good value addition for Moyes, with the West Ham boss looking to squeeze every last penny out of his budget.

West Ham should fancy their chances of rivalling Palace for his signature.
