West Ham United make approach for ‘highly-rated’ Ronnie Edwards, Peterborough United expect him to leave

West Ham United have made an approach to sign Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards, according to Sky Sports.

The publication reported on its website on Tuesday (29 August) that the East London club have been tracking the 20-year-old for a period of time.

Sky Sports added that the Hammers have been joined by a number of fellow Premier League in their lengthy pursuit of the centre-back.

“West Ham have made an initial approach for Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards,” according to Sky Sports. “The Hammers are amongst a host of Premier League clubs who have been tracking the 20-year-old over a period of time.

“The League One side had publicly admitted earlier in the summer that they expect the highly-rated centre-back to depart in this window.”

Another defender incoming?

West Ham have made no secret in their wish to sign a new defender this summer, with the club seemingly coming close to bringing in Harry Maguire from Manchester United.
But a deal for the England international did not happen in the end, with David Moyes instead welcoming former Arsenal centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos to East London.

However, that may not be enough if the Hammers want to successfully compete in all competitions this season. They have made a superb start to the new Premier League campaign, going unbeaten from their first three matches.

But things will no doubt be taken up a level when the London Stadium club get their Europa League campaign underway.

Edwards is likely to be one for the future if he does make the switch to West Ham, but it could also be that he lands some minutes in the less-important competitions, with Moyes giving youngsters a chance in the Europa Conference League last time out.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have held talks for a new striker, with a loan or permanent deal possible.
