West Ham United: Konstantinos Mavropanos injury update emerges ahead of Bayer Leverkusen clash

West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is expected to miss the Hammers clash with Bayer Leverkusen through injury, according to talkSPORT.

The broadcaster reported on its website on Tuesday (16 April) that the Greek centre-back is expected to join both Kalvin Phillips and Alphonse Areola on the treatment table for the second leg of the Europa League clash on Thursday (18 April).

Jarrod Bowen could make a return to the squad as he is set to undergo a very late fitness test to determine whether or not he is fit to play a part having missed both of the Hammers’ last two matches.

Mavropanos started David Moyes’ side’s defeat to Fulham on Sunday (14 April) and played a huge role in the away side’s opening goal before being substituted on 60 minutes having picked up a new injury in the second half.

While Mavropanos has come under scrutiny from pundits and fans alike during his tenure at the London Stadium, the Greek international has arguably been one of the Hammers’ most consistent defenders this season.

Both Nayef Ageurd and Kurt Zouma have looked off of the pace after excellent starts to the campaign, while Angelo Ogbonna has been little more than a back-up option, only really featuring in the Europa League.

Had he been fit, Mavropanos would have almost certainly started and more likely than not played the full 90 minutes against Xabi Alonso’s side on Thursday, so it will be a blow to Moyes’ European hopes that the 26-year-old is set to miss out.

With Lucas Paqueta and Emerson already sidelined through suspension, Bowen facing a nervous wait to prove his fitness and now Mavropanos reportedly ruled out, it is hard to see how West Ham overturn their two-goal deficit.
