West Ham United: Journalist shares what Flynn Downes did after loss v Bayer Leverkusen
Flynn Downes went into the West Ham changing room after the Europa League game against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday (18 April), according to Ryan Taylor.
The Daily Mirror journalist confirmed the news in a tweet on Thursday, where he shared a photo of Ben Johnson speaking to Downes’s Southampton teammate Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who the Hammers previously tried to sign.
The 25-year-old Irons midfielder, who is on loan with the Saints, was in attendance at the London Stadium to see David Moyes’s side fall to a 3-1 defeat on aggregate after playing out a 1-1 draw in the second leg.
Flynn Downes showing West Ham loyalty against Bayer Leverkusen
It’s nice to see that Downes cares enough to make the trip back to East London to cheer on his West Ham teammates against Leverkusen.
It’s interesting that he also brought Harwood-Bellis with him, particularly after the Hammers were heavily linked with a move to sign him from his parent club Manchester City last summer.
Downes has been in fine form for Southampton this season, having made 31 appearances in his bid to help them earn promotion back to the Premier League.
But he will have been disappointed for his Irons teammates to see them crash out of Europe on the back of an excellent performance against Leverkusen.
A fast start saw forward Michail Antonio hand us a lifeline in the tie before a late Jeremie Frimpong leveller killed our hopes of a comeback, but the players can certainly be proud of their efforts.
