West Ham United: Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy argue over ‘incredibly harsh’ controversy v Wolves
Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy argued live on talkSPORT after Wolves’ late equaliser was ruled off in a controversial VAR decision in the 2-1 West Ham win at Molineux.
Max Kilman saw his late headed goal disallowed after it was judged there was an offside player blocking the goalkeeper – despite there being no chance Lukasz Fabianski would have saved it.
Cundy insisted that rules are rules, he was blocking the goalkeeper so it was offside, while O’Hara questioned what the game is coming to if goals are being disallowed in those circumstances.
Speaking live on talkSPORT [6 April, 18:13], O’Hara ranted: “They’ve chalked off a perfectly good goal. I just don’t see how you can chalk a goal off like that, what are you doing? What’s the game coming to when you’re chalking off goals like that? He’s not in the way.”
Cundy attempted to explain: “I feel for him, but the letter of the law… It’s harsh, it’s incredibly harsh, but I’m sorry if you’re in an offside position in the six-yard box in front of the goalkeeper, it’s going to be offside. 100 times out of 100.”
O’Hara then fumed: “I disagree. He makes no attempt to get near the ball, Fabianski is nowhere near it, he makes no difference to his eye line, no difference to how he’s going to move or what save he’s going to make. He’s nowhere near it.”
Cundy then rounded off by saying: “And he’s offside.”
Jason Cundy & Jamie O’Hara argue over latest West Ham controversy
Even the most die-hard West Ham supporter has to admit there was an air of ridiculousness around the decision to disallow Kilman’s goal. While the decision ultimately benefited the Hammers, it’s simply not a good look for the game.
By the letter of the law, it may have been offside, but using common sense should make it clear that the player near him did not put off Fabianski, as he was never going to be able to make the save even without him there.
The club have also been hit by their fair share of VAR controversy, most recently in the Newcastle defeat as the Magpies were awarded a penalty much to the annoyance of Micah Richards and the delight of Alan Shearer.

The Hammers have been no strangers to controversy this season whether it be on the field or off of it, with Kalvin Phillips kickstarting the latest debate after an altercation with a fan following the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle.
In other West Ham news, David Moyes got it wrong as one decision was made ahead of the game.
