West Ham United interested in exit-bound Lille midfielder Amadou Onana

West Ham are interested in Amadou Onana from Lille, who are forced to sell players after missing out on the Champions League, Foot Mercato reports.

The 20-year-old’s exit has already been sanctioned by the management, who recognise the need to weaken the squad in order to bring money in after finishing the league season down in 10th as reigning champions.

The nightmare defence of their title has necessarily meant missing out on the European top table and the money that comes with it, so Onana is available along with stars such as Renato Sanches and Jonathan David.

According to Foot Mercato Arsenal and Monaco are also overseeing the situation, with the Ligue 1 side’s manager Philippe Clement a particular fan having attempted to sign him previously.

He is mooted as a possible replacement for Aurelien Tchouameni in the principality, who is a target for Real Madrid.

Midfield is a clear area of potential weakness behind the starting pair of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek, so if injury strikes either it could spell disaster without reinforcements.

Belgium under-21 international Onana has European experience from this season’s Champions League campaign, and made a total of 42 appearances in all competitions.

At just 20 and already highly experienced he could be an attractive option for David Moyes, especially if the necessity for the deposed French champions to shed players after their poor season makes him more affordable.

He reportedly cost just €7million when he arrived from Hamburg last summer, and while his value will have gone up this season, it will be a buyer’s market with Lille this summer.

If Monaco get in first it could lead to a bidding war so Moyes would need to move quite quickly to get ahead of things.

Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma is believed to be another option to arrive at the London Stadium, and his recent social media activity suggests that the exit-bound Seagulls player prefers to join the Hammers.

The club need to bring in a strong addition at the position and either of these two appear to be in the right mould.

In other West Ham news, the club face a chase with a giant Serie A side for another emerging midfield talent in Europe.
