West Ham United injury news as Gianluca Scamacca may now need surgery

West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca may now need surgery on a knee problem despite David Moyes’ hope that he will not, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper shared in their print edition [05 April, pg 50] that the Italian will be watched closely as he gets set for another spell on the sidelines.

It represents further frustration for the Italy international as well as the Hammers fans given the expectation following the high profile £35 million capture from Sassuolo in July last year. So far, Scamacca has recorded just 11 Premier League starting appearances (16 in total) with an underwhelming return of three goals. He has added a further three goals from seven outings in the Europa Conference League.

Moyes said: We think it doesn’t need surgery but we need to see how the next two weeks go.”

Despite that, the woes of Scamacca look set to continue at the London Stadium as his stop-start season takes yet another hit, when many thought it couldn’t get much worse.

Prepare for next season

At a crucial time of this campaign, West Ham and David Moyes need the maximum return from the squad in order to stave off the threat of relegation. It will be of significant frustration to the manager that he will not be able to call upon Scamacca in what has been a recurring theme of his debut season.

Given the two week layoff until more is known around his situation, the best case scenario would likely be a further period of recovery before he is able to make a meaningful contribution on the pitch which would take us up to the closing stages of the Premier League season.

Scamacca is unlikely to feature seriously in Moyes plans, ahead of pre-season. The next few months will be critical for the striker in order to be in a position to kick-start his career in England and show that he is capable of living up to the headline billing that surrounded his arrival from Serie A.
