West Ham United injury news as Angelo Ogbonna concern emerges v Gent

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna appears to have picked up an injury concern in the Europa Conference League quarter final first leg against Gent.

The Italian international suffered a heavy landing following an aerial collision, requiring treatment on the pitch at the Ghelamco Arena, with Lucy Ward and Adam Summerton concerned.

Ogbonna appeared to be struggling but he managed to get back up and resume play as the Hammers aim to secure a positive result for the second leg.

Speaking live on BT Sports [13 April, 18:13], the commentary team of Summerton and Ward touched on the immediate worry for the central defender,

“This is a concern,” Ward said. “It was a heavy landing.”

“He’s had such rotten luck,” – stated Summerton

Concern confirmed

Within a few minutes of play restarting, Ogbonna received a yellow card meaning that he will miss the second leg at the London Stadium next week anyway.

That confirmed a concern for the quarter final decider but hopefully it won’t be compounded by a layoff for the 34-year old.

He will be a crucial figure for David Moyes’ side in the remaining Premier League games, as well as the assault on Europe.

The player will be assessed after the game in Belgium when more will be known on his condition but he will be able to prepare for the crunch game against Arsenal on Sunday knowing that he will have a full week of recovery after that.

If the Hammers are to progress to the semi-final of the Europa Conference League, it will mean a heavy schedule going deep into the conclusion of the season. Injuries and suspensions are an inevitability in what will be an action packed finale to the campaign at the London Stadium.
