West Ham United in are tracking FC Zurich defender Becir Omeragic

West Ham United have opened talks to sign FC Zurich defender Becir Omeragic with the 20-year-old heading into the final year of his contract, as revealed by Tuttomercatoweb.

The Italian news outlet revealed on Wednesday [8 June], that West Ham are in talks with the Switzerland international, along with a host of clubs from Italy including Torino and AC Milan.

The right-footed centre-half played 28 times in all competitions for FC Zurich this season, as well as four matches for the Switzerland Under-21s side.

Out of the blue

If any West Ham fan has ever said they’ve heard of the defender then they are probably lying.

Nevertheless, David Moyes has previously had immense success when bringing unheard of players to the club with Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal two examples of recent good business.

The 20-year-old would be a risk-free signing as he would command a relatively low fee given he is entering the final year of his contract and being a young player his wages would be comparatively low.

If West Ham did make a move for Omeragic then he could well be viewed as a signing for the future.

The Hammers need to bolster their defensive options after conceding plenty of sloppy goals towards the end of the season.

Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma were excellent for the Hammers over the course of last season but were clearly overplayed and tired towards the conclusion of the campaign.

Moyes desperately needs to add some much-needed depth to call upon and rotate his squad to keep his players fresh.

This summer is huge for Moyes to overhaul his squad and turn the Hammers into regular top-six contenders.

In other West Ham news, the traditions of pre-season at the Hammers could be under threat as London Stadium works could see the annual game postponed.
