West Ham United gem George Earthy handed chance in new England squad update

West Ham United youngster George Earthy has received his first call up to the England Under-21s squad, the Football Association has confirmed.

England Football posted on their website (12 November) that Earthy, along with Newcastle midfielder Lewis Miley and Norwich City’s Kellen Fisher, have been drafted into the Under-21s for the first time.

Earthy played four first-team games for the Irons last season and scored his first league goal, but was loaned to Championship side Bristol City for the current campaign, where he’s made eight appearances.

The 20-year-old midfielder has played for three of England’s youth sides in his fledgling career and has been a regular for the Under-20s side, but is now preparing to make the next step up.

George Earthy ready to take next steps for West Ham and England

Much was expected of Earthy after his four cameo appearances towards the back end of last season, particularly when he came of the bench to score against Luton Town in the Irons’ penultimate fixture.

The Hammers academy product may have struggled with injury since heading out on loan to Ashton Gate, but he’s clearly shown enough in his eight Robins appearances to earn an England promotion.

With the likes of James McAtee, Archie Gray and Elliot Anderson also in the squad, Earthy won’t find an easy route into Ben Futcher’s midfield, but any minutes for the Irons youngster will be valuable.

Earthy will undoubtedly be looking to get onto the pitch more often for his club after a disrupted start to his loan spell, and he’ll hope that Futcher’s faith translates into further game-time with the Robins.

Jarrod Bowen also received a late call-up for his country – in his case the senior squad – but history will tell the Three Lions that the more Hammers representatives are in the system, the better.
