West Ham United fight Newcastle for Maxwel Cornet with bid made
West Ham have made a bid for Maxwel Cornet as Newcastle push to land the Ivorian, according to former BBC journalist Fraser Fletcher.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon had previously reported on Patreon that David Moyes was willing to pay £20million to land the Burnley man, who is available after the Clarets were relegated to the Championship.
The 25-year-old was thought to have a £17.5million release-clause in his contract, but according to Nixon that has been “overruled” after it came out in public.
He is expected to leave however, and after Everton failed in their advances and the likes of Fulham and Nottingham Forest were indecisive, it appears to be a straight fight between the Irons and Newcastle, according to Fletcher.
He wrote on his personal Twitter account on Monday (1 August): “Maxwel Cornet future getting closer. Newcastle pushing for deal with Burnley and West Ham have offer on table now as winger looks set to leave as expected”.
After the move to sign Eintracht Frankfurt wing-back Filip Kostic hit a roadblock it has become more important for the Hammers to sign an option for the left flank.

Newcastle have been loitering around most of the players West Ham have tried to sign this summer so it is no surprise to see it apparently come down to the same two teams here.
Considering Cornet has been available for a knock-down price all summer it is a surprise that he is still currently at Turf Moor.
Whether his release clause is still in place or not he shouldn’t cost a huge amount in the circumstances, and would seem to have been easily available for any number of sides who had an interest.

But now that the Hammers have apparently put a bid in the answer is surely not far away, with the season just around the corner.
If the offers from the London Stadium and St James’ Park are adequate for Vincent Kompany’s side it will just come down to who can convince the player they are a better option for him.
The recent history under Moyes surely makes the Irons an attractive option, especially with the additional quality that has been added during the transfer window.
The wildcard is the new-found reputation as arguably the richest side in football for the Magpies, although that has yet to manifest itself fully.
With this deal still in the offing and the club continuing to push for other big-money additions, the project under Moyes is shaping up to be an exciting one for fans and prospective signings.
