West Ham United: FIFA official branded ‘moron’ after what he did in loss v Bayer Leverkusen

Tom Rennie has slammed Jose Maria Sanchez for his performance in the West Ham game against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday (18 April).

The talkSPORT broadcaster tweeted on Thursday that the FIFA official, who took charge of the Hammers’ 1-1 draw against the Bundesliga champions, is a “woeful referee” following his display.

He added that the Spaniard is “truly a moron” after making several strange decisions in the Europa League quarter-final second leg at the London Stadium, where the draw meant the Irons lost 3-1 on aggregate to the German side.

“Jose Maria Sanchez is a woeful referee,” said Rennie. “Truly a moron.”

FIFA official had poor game in West Ham against Bayer Leverkusen

There is no doubt that many West Ham fans will have left the London Stadium feeling the exact same way as Rennie about Sanchez’s performance.

It was bizarre that the official just seemed to completely change the way he was reffing the game in the second half.

The game flowed well in the first half, with the referee barely involved, but he stopped play at every opportunity after the break and halted any Hammers momentum.

It felt as though we had a great chance to score what would have been a crucial second goal following Michail Antonio’s opener, but Sanchez prevented that from happening and allowed Leverkusen to come back into the match.

It was extremely frustrating viewing, with the Irons fans venting their anger at the referee throughout the second half, before Jeremie Frimpong popped up with a late equaliser to secure his side’s place in the semi-finals of the competition.
