West Ham United eye move for Southampton defender Jan Bednarek

West Ham United have joined the race to sign Southampton defender Jan Bednarek this summer, according to talkSPORT correspondent Alex Crook.

The 42-time Polish international has been an almost ever-present at St Mary’s since his move from Lech Poznan in 2017 but the new signing of Armel Bella-Kotchap has put his place in the back four under threat.

As a result, the Hammers have registered their interest in the 26-year-old but they face competition from within the Premier League as Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa are also in the hunt to sign him.

There is also interest from abroad in Bednarek who has made more than 130 appearances for the Saints and is still pivotal to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans.

“Aston Villa are not the only club with an eye on Bednarek. Believe West Ham United also hold an interest along with an overseas side,” Crook said via his personal Twitter account.

Unnecessary

Does David Moyes really need yet another central defender this summer?

West Ham have already added Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer to their defensive repertoire and they have only seen Issa Diop leave the club in that position.

Aguerd’s injury hasn’t helped matters but it seems like no one has told Moyes that there are other areas that need strengthening at the London Stadium.

The Hammers are yet to score in the Premier League after two matches played this season but they have looked relatively calm at the back despite Ben Johnson deputising as a centre-half on occasions.

If anything, there isn’t much else the Irons need to do to improve their current squad bar a couple of squad additions that can help add depth to certain positions.

Left-back is particularly a place where Moyes needs cover and Emerson Palmieri could be the man to provide it but Bednarek is definitely not.
