West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd to be monitored ahead of clash v Newcastle United

West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd will need to be monitored ahead of their clash with Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, according to BBC Sport.

The Moroccan international defender proved the hero for the Hammers scoring the decisive winner in their 1-0 win over Southampton on Sunday [2 April] taking them out of the relegation zone.

However, the 26-year-old has been nursing a niggling hip problem which has brought concern around the club throughout the season.

And BBC Sport [4 April], has revealed ahead of the game that both he and Gianluca Scamacca will be assessed before Wednesday’s visit of Newcastle.

However, David Moyes speaking in his press conference ahead of the game confirmed that the Italian hitman will need two weeks of rehabilitation on a knee issue, which would rule him out of the game.

Hope and pray

With the Hammers facing off against an in-form Newcastle side on Wednesday, Moyes will need all of his key individuals fit and firing on all cylinders and that includes arguably his best-performing defender this season Aguerd who has been a pivotal figure at the back ever since his £30m signing [Sky Sports, 21 June] last summer.

Aguerd has indeed had his fair share of injuries this season, especially after his tremendous exploits at the World Cup for Morocco in Qatar, but when he’s been in the team, the 26-year-old has shown how crucial he is and can be for the club.

And coming up against a Newcastle side looking very confident in attack, it is imperative Aguerd forms the heart of the West Ham United defence and the former Everton boss will be hoping and praying his star defender is fit for Wednesday’s clash at the London Stadium. He is crucial to their Premier League survival hopes.

Scamacca’s injury latest will be a huge concern though, especially in the context of his immediate future in East London, which looks increasingly bleak.
