West Ham United: David Ornstein responds directly to David Moyes sack question with ‘amazing’ verdict

David Ornstein has replied directly to a question surrounding David Moyes’ future at West Ham United, admitting he wouldn’t be surprised if the Scotsman signs a new deal with the Irons.

The Scotsman is four years into his second spell at the London Stadium which has largely been a success, but his current deal expires at the end of the campaign with talks yet to begin to extend his time in charge of the Hammers.

Some supporters have suggested that a more progressive manager could get more out of the current group of players and while Ornstein admitted that Irons will be looking at new options, he didn’t rule out Moyes remaining in charge.

Writing in his weekly Athletic Q&A on Thursday (7 December) he said: “His contract expires in the summer and that is when West Ham intend to review the situation. They will naturally be surveying the market for options if Moyes isn’t to continue, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he does.

“He has done an amazing job in this second spell, led them to a European trophy and they sit ninth in the PL table this season. Massive game tonight, of course.”

Wouldn’t be a surprise

The pressure surrounding Moyes at West Ham seems to have been present ever since he arrived in East London, with consistent suggestions that a new manager would be more than capable of getting more out of the players in the Irons ranks.

It feels almost as though some supporters have already assumed that Moyes will depart at the end of his contract and a new manager will be in the dugout next season, but it seems a genuine possibility that the Scotsman will remain in charge.

The 60-year-old deserves plenty of credit for the job he’s done at the London Stadium since returning in 2019 as he has transformed what looked like a relegation-destined club into a consistent European side in the top half of the Premier League.

It won’t suit all Hammers fans if Moyes’ contract is extended beyond the end of the current campaign, but it does feel as though Ornstein’s prediction could come true if West Ham finish the season strongly. The Irons could do much worse than keep the Scotsman in charge.
