Jamie Carragher shares David Moyes sack verdict live on Sky Sports after West Ham United defeat v Aston Villa

Jamie Carragher says David Moyes should be saluted for his “remarkable” work as West Ham manager as he offered his backing to the Scotsman.

West Ham lost 4-1 away at Aston Villa on Sunday (22 October) to make it three defeats in their past five Premier League matches.

Moyes has previously faced questions over his future, but Carragher does not believe he could realistically be doing any more right now.

Asked if West Ham need to start beating teams above them in order to close the gap on the heavyweights, Carragher told Sky Sports [October 22, 19:15]: “In terms of West Ham bridging the gap to Liverpool or Manchester City, it’s not being disrespectful to say even their own supporters wouldn’t expect that gap to be bridged.

“What they’ve done under Moyes is remarkable; they’ve done fantastically well. They’ve made a great start to the season, albeit they didn’t play very well [against Villa].

“They’re 17 unbeaten in Europe – that’s unbelievable for West Ham and David Moyes. They’ve done brilliantly. When you lose a game in the manner they have, Moyes will not want that and will want to put that right next weekend.”

Inevitable

As was the case last season, with each defeat comes doubts over whether Moyes is the right man to take this talented group of players to the next level.

Unlike last season, though, Moyes now has plenty of credit in the bank after guiding the club to their first trophy in over 40 years with last season’s Europa Conference League triumph.

It must also be remembered that, while the Irons’ recent league form has been pretty underwhelming – just four points from the past 15 on offer – they are still ninth in the table, five points off the top six.

That is not ideal given the aim this season was to challenge for the top six, granted, but nor is it disastrous. But United have a home game against Everton up next in the league, providing a good opportunity to quickly bounce back.

More immediately, the Hammers travel to Olympiacos in the Europa League, and it has often been those European nights that have helped to lift the mood when things seem bleak domestically.

Let’s hope that proves to be the case once again, with two wins from two the aim this week.
