West Ham United manager David Moyes makes sack admission on Sky Sports
David Moyes admits he cannot be sure if he would have been sacked by West Ham if not for the famous Europa Conference League triumph.
United defeated Fiorentina in a tense final on 7 June to win their first trophy in 43 years, papering over what was a disappointing domestic campaign.
The Irons recovered to eventually finish 14th in the Premier League, but doubts were raised over Moyes’ future at various points in the season.

Asked if he felt he would be sacked if not for the European run, Moyes told Sky Sports [22 October, 15:55]: “I don’t know.
“West Ham have been very good to me, but I hope David [Sullivan] will think I’ve been good to West Ham as well.
“Last season we didn’t do so well, but we ended up lifting a trophy for the first time in over 40 years.”
Moyes added: “I have to say, we’ve signed a couple of really good players since then that have helped us.
“I think West Ham are a club that is improving, growing, getting better with lots of good things going on.”
Earned the right
Even after that night in Prague, many wondered if Moyes would bow out on the highest of highs.
However, while last season’s Premier League campaign was a huge disappointment, the Scotsman earned the right to decide his own future.
After a positive start to the 2023-24 campaign, it is fair to say Moyes – and the club – made the right call.
After all, things did not pan out all that well the last time United decided to twist rather than stick by swapping Moyes with Manuel Pellegrini.

It remains to be seen exactly how much longer Moyes will remain at the London Stadium helm, but his contract is only due to run until next summer.
Like last season, results in all competitions, not just the Premier League, will likely determine whether or not those terms are extended further.
When Moyes does eventually bow out, he will go knowing he contributed to one of the greatest nights in West Ham’s history.
In other West Ham news, insiders have shared the Hammers’ stance on whether they intend to move for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay or not.
