West Ham United ‘curse’ real after Niclas Fullkrug update at the London Stadium

Tom Rennie has suggested the West Ham United “curse” is real after a new Niclas Fullkrug update emerged in East London.

Reports suggest that the German international is unlikely to feature against Tottenham on Saturday (19 October), with his injury set to keep him sidelined in East London for a few more weeks yet [The West Ham Way, 16 October].

Although the news has not yet been officially confirmed by the club of Julen Lopetegui, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie has already been left disappointed by the update, going as far as to suggest the Irons are cursed.

Writing on X on Wednesday (16 October) Rennie said: “The curse is real.”

What has happened to West Ham attacker Niclas Fullkrug at the London Stadium?

West Ham’s striker problem has been well-documented over the last few years and it is something that both Lopetegui and Tim Steidten were keen to finally put to an end during the summer transfer window.

The Hammers have been forced to rely on goals from their wide players in the past, with strikers such as Danny Ings, Gianluca Scamacca and Simone Zaza never managing to hit the heights expected of them in claret and blue.

Fullkrug was supposed to be the man to break that curse at the top end of the pitch and while the German international has been fine when he has played, he has spent more time on the treatment table than he has on the pitch.

The Irons do not have the strength or depth to have their big-money forward stuck on the sidelines for long periods of the season. West Ham simply have to find a way to get Fullkrug fit and firing sooner rather than later.

Hopefully, it won’t be too long before supporters get to see him back on the field in Hammers colours, but the powers at be may already have one eye on the January transfer window and a potential move for another forward.

So far, Fullkrug has shown that he simply cannot be relied upon.
