West Ham United chiefs convinced they can sign Wilfried Zaha amid contract development at Crystal Palace

West Ham are interested in the summer signature of Crystal Palace and Ivory Coast winger Wilfried Zaha, according to the Daily Star.

But the Hammers find themselves in a battle with Premier League rivals Newcastle, who reportedly have a “long-running interest” in the forward.

Zaha is currently sidelined with a groin injury picked up in the match against Leicester on Saturday (1 April).

“It’s understood West Ham bigwigs believe the prospect of staying in London could be a compelling option for the experienced forward,” according to the Daily Star.

“A contract extension at Palace still isn’t out of the question, but Zaha will listen to offers and is prepared to move away from Selhurst Park after spending the majority of his career in south London.”

Speaking about Zaha back in January 2020 amid reported interest from Arsenal, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said [Express]: “I think he’s a terrific player and I think the impact he’s had in the Premier League in the last few years has been phenomenal.

“His ability to create chances on his own is unique. We know Wilf and the type of talent he is. When he gets isolated in one-on-one situations, we know what he can do.”

Dividing opinion

Zaha continues to be one of the most divisive players in the Premier League, with the winger drawing both praise and criticism from many within the game.

There are those who believe the winger is full of talent and crucial to Crystal Palace’s success, with others suggesting that he needs to do more in the final third given his attacking role on the pitch.

The Ivory Coast international was previously handed a big break when he was signed by Premier League giants Manchester United in 2013, but it didn’t go to plan for either party.

Zaha did, of course, play under David Moyes during their time at the Red Devils, with the winger very outspoken about his lack of opportunities under the boss at Old Trafford.

The move failed to result in any success and Zaha quickly returned to Palace, so any move to West Ham would definitely be worth keeping an eye on if Moyes remains in the dugout at the London Stadium.

Newcastle meanwhile will find themselves as favourites in the running for his signature given their financial superiority, but also given the fact they are challenging for the top four and subsequently Champions League football next season.
