Chelsea make approach to sign Michail Antonio, West Ham United respond to transfer move

Big-spending Chelsea made an approach to sign West Ham United forward Michail Antonio on loan to solve their striking crisis, according to The Observer Sport, (15 January, page 6).

Antonio has fallen down the pecking order at the London Stadium after becoming second-fiddle to summer signing Gianluca Scamacca.

The report claims that West Ham United rejected Chelsea’s cheap loan efforts for Antonio, however, the club would be open to selling the forward on a permanent deal.

“It can also be revealed that the injury crisis in attack even led Chelsea to enquire about signing West Ham forward Michail Antonio on a cheap loan,” reported The Observer Sport, (15 January, page 6).

“The offer was rejected as West Ham do not want to loan Antonio out. They are, however, open to selling the forward, who has interest from Wolves.”

West Ham

No thanks.

Letting Antonio leave the club in the midst of a relegation battle would be extremely foolish business from the Hammers and it’s something that should be avoided entirely.

If the Irons Premier League position was looking less precarious, then a move could have been considered, nevertheless, that is not where the team is at right now.

At 32-years-old Antonio is certainly past his peak years but he can still do a classy job at the London Stadium when needed by David Moyes.

He’s a proven Premier League goalscorer and his priceless experience in the top flight will be needed during this campaign to guide the Hammers out of misery.

With 18 months still left on Antonio’s contract, the club would be better off waiting until the summer to decide on the forward’s future.

Let’s hope this transfer story is put to bed in January, no one wants to see Antonio leave the Hammers this month.
