West Ham United: Carlos Corberan makes ‘pity’ admission over Callum Marshall at West Brom
West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has admitted that it is a “pity” that West Ham loanee Callum Marshall hasn’t had much game time yet.
The Hammers gave the youngster the green light to join the Baggies on loan in the January transfer window.
Marshall, 19, has since found it hard to get into the first team at the Hawthorns in the Championship.
He has been limited to just three league appearances off the bench since his switch.
Corberan has had this to say regarding the player’s situation, as per a report by the Express & Star (6 March): “It’s a pity because he’s a player with a lot of good skills and he’s in a position where there is still a lot of growth. He is in a growing process but he isn’t going to be just ready with game minutes. It’s part of this.
“At West Ham, he trained six times with the first team. The other parts were with the 21s. They’re competing in the same league as our 21s and how many players from our under 21s are in our squad? Only in the cup we did.”
He added: “From since he arrived here, he has had three moments in the Championship, plus training all week with the players, which day by day is going to help him to grow.
“You can watch this, or just watch how many minutes he plays. I think he’s still growing, he has players in front of him which’ll challenge his position.”
West Ham gem Callum Marshall struggles for minutes at West Brom
It is a shame that Marshall hasn’t managed to make much of an impact at West Brom yet.
West Ham will have loaned him out to get some regular game time under his belt in the second tier to help boost his development before he eventually returned to the London Stadium.
However, there is too much competition for his place in the team with the Baggies due to the abundance of senior options that they have at their disposal in his position as they chase down promotion to the Premier League.
Perhaps a better option for the Hammers would have been to send him to a team lower down the table or in League One. That way he would have been guaranteed more opportunities than he is getting right now in the Midlands.

Marshall has been on the books at West Ham since 2022 after they snapped him up from Linfield. He made his senior debut for David Moyes’ side back in January in their FA Cup clash against Bristol City.
