West Ham United boss David Moyes is not willing to spend big on a striker this summer

West Ham boss David Moyes is not willing to spend big on a striker this summer and believes Michail Antonio can lead the line in the 2022-23 season, according to club website Claret & Hugh.

West Ham had been linked with a summer move for Chelsea’s Armando Broja [Daily Mail] but Hammers news website Claret & Hugh appeared to suggest Moyes is not willing to overpay for the 20-year-old.

Instead, they believe the West Ham manager is content to deploy 32-year-old Antonio in the central role again in the 2022-23 season.

Claret & Hugh wrote on Wednesday [1 June]: “Moyes is unwilling to spend big on a striker this summer because he believes Antonio can continue to lead the line for at least another season.

“We have reported that the Hammers boss is interested in Armando Broja at Chelsea, but that deal would cost around £25m.”

The report added: “Moyes is not willing to spend much more than that as he looks to ensure his budget stretches as far as it possibly can.

“Antonio is 32 but he is likely to again shoulder the burden of leading the line for the majority of 2022/23 unless Moyes has a significant change of heart.”

Big mistake

Moyes will be making a huge mistake if he doesn’t invest properly into a top-class striker this summer.

Unfortunately, the West Ham manager needs to realise that strikers come at a premium because ultimately goals win football matches.

Moyes must invest in a striker that can rival Antonio and not merely be a backup for the Jamaican international.

It would be a a huge mistake for the Irons not to pursue a deal for someone like Broja.

West Ham

£25million for a player who is still in the early stages of his career and Premier League experience is a no brainer.

If a top class striker does not come through the door at the London Stadium then the West Ham faithful can begin to seriously worry about the club’s long-term ambitions.

Moyes has worked wonders this season and it would be a huge mistake not to use their excellent 2021-22 season as a platform to become consistent top-six contenders.

In other West Ham news, Stuart Pearce was emotional as he described his parting message to one Irons star on his final day at the club.
