West Ham United: BBC Sport pundit slams Nayef Aguerd for ‘worst mistake’ v Man United

BBC pundit Pat Nevin slammed Nayef Aguerd for his “worst mistake” in West Ham’s 3-1 defeat against Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round.

The Carabao Cup winners came from a goal down to beat West Ham and move into the FA Cup quarter-finals in a frantic finish at Old Trafford.

And two of the Red Devils’ goals came from defensive lapses from one of David Moyes’s trusted defensive lieutenants with Moroccan struggling as United came firing back late on, scoring an own goal and laying on Fred to finish things off.

And Nevin, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra’s live commentary [1 March, 21:41] slammed the defender of his defensive mishaps. He said: “Nayef Aguerd has just blown it again and that is the worst mistake of the night. He leaves it right in front of Fred.

Really unfortunate

Up until Manchester United’s resurgence in the second half, Aguerd was arguably the best defender of the park, stifling Wout Weghorst’s threat and once again proving why he is the best centre-back at the club.

However, as has been the case for many top centre-backs at Old Trafford many times before, the Moroccan was the latest victim of the Red Devil’s late onslaught, scoring an own goal and then providing an unlikely assist for Fred to make it 3-1.

The Moroccan will quickly want to move on from this performance, and it’s made even worse that is occurred in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Moyes will be livid with his side’s poor defensive performance and Aguerd isn’t the only one who will be on the end of the manager’s harsh words in the Hammers’ dressing room.
