West Ham United arrival Gianluca Scammaca reveals Pedro Obiang recommendation

West Ham newboy Gianluca Scammaca has revealed that he had spoken to former Hammer Pedro Obiang before moving to the club.

The Hammer’s secured the signing of the Italian frontman for a reported fee of £35.5m, with the former Sassuolo man signing a five-year deal at the club [Sky Sports].

However, the new striker has now told of how ex-Irons midfielder Obiang, who was Sacammaca’s teammate at Sassuolo last season, had spoken to him before the 23-year-old made the move to the London Stadium, as did Italy boss Roberto Mancini.

Scammaca told the club media channel: “We speak before I came here and he said it was a perfect place for me.

“For growing up, for playing, for involvement, and to get better.

“Premier League is the best league.”

Agent Obiang?

It is no surprise that Obiang speaks so highly of the club, as he was a player who adhered himself well to the West Ham faithful during his four-year stay at the club.

The Guinea international joined the club from Sampdoria in 2015, and made 116 appearances for the Hammers, scoring three goals and providing three assists during that time.

He may not have scored many but Hammers will remember his iconic screamer against Tottenham Hotspur in a 1-1 draw in January 2018, a goal that eventually won the club’s goal of the season award.

The dynamic defensive midfielder left the club in 2019 to return to Serie A with Sassuolo, and it is there where the midfielder, who was born in Spain, told incoming striker Scammaca what to expect when he moves to the London Stadium.

West Ham fans now will be hoping that Scamacca will hit the ground running at the club and pick up from where he left off in Italy.

The six-foot-three striker averaged a goal every 2.5 games last season, and if he can bring that impressive strike rate to London, he will quickly become a fan’s favourite amongst the Irons faithful next season.

In other West Ham news, the club are reportedly leading the race to sign Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis.
